Toy haulers are great for those who wish to bring a powersports vehicle along on their RV camping trip because their built-in cargo bays provide a place to easily store said powersports vehicles during transit. Compared to alternatives like double towing (towing two trailers at once) or having one tow vehicle for each trailer, toy haulers are the most convenient. However, it’s important that users follow the correct procedures to ensure that the powersports vehicle reaches its destination unharmed. That is why Broadmoor RV has created this guide to loading a toy hauler.

Prepare Your Toy Hauler

Before taking a huge vehicle like a toy hauler out on the road, it’s important that you observe basic safety precautions. Start by checking your tire pressure and mirrors. Make sure that your tires are well-inflated and in good condition, and that you can see the whole length of the trailer through your side mirrors. You should also check that your turn signals and brake lights are bright and highly visible so that you can signal other motorists.

Distribute the Weight

Even weight distribution will help make towing your trailer smoother. Ideally, 60% of the weight should be in front of the front axle, and 40% should be behind the front axle. Remember to balance out the weight of your powersports vehicle by putting more weight at the front. You should also balance your cargo weight evenly from left to right to ensure better control and more even tire wear.

Loading

Once you are confident in how you have balanced the weight, it is time to load the trailer. Start by lowering your gate so that you can use it as a loading ramp. Loading on level ground with the ramp at a low angle will make for easier loading. Drive the vehicle up the ramp slowly and turn the engine off.

Secure Your Vehicle

Once the powersports vehicle is inside, tie it down securely using ratchet straps or D-ring tie-downs. Give it a few tugs to make sure that nothing is loose. Remember that if your powersports vehicle is allowed to shift around during transit, it can mess up your weight distribution and damage both the interior of your toy hauler and the powersports vehicle itself.
