While not technically a requirement, you will almost always want to level your travel trailer once you arrive at your destination for comfort and stability. However, those without automatic leveling systems often find the process to be drawn out and burdensome. That is why Broadmoor RV has created this guide for easier travel trailer leveling.

Find a Suitable Location

Choosing the right location can make leveling your travel trailer much easier. Try to find the flattest spot possible so that you don’t have to compensate for uneven terrain. You should also try to avoid leveling on loose materials like sand or gravel, as they can shift under pressure and make your job harder. If conditions at the site are poor for leveling, do what you can to work within the constraints and find the best spot possible, even if it is not perfect.

Level from Side to Side

While your trailer is still attached to its tow vehicle, use a level to determine which side will need to be raised and by how much. Move the entire unit forward and place leveling blocks or boards in the places where your tires will eventually go. Then back up the unit and check the evenness. Repeat the process, adjusting as needed, until the travel trailer is even. Be warned that this may take some time. Once you are satisfied that your RV is even from side to side, secure the wheels and disconnect the tow vehicle.

Level from Front to Back

Next, level from front to back by adjusting the hitch using your jack. Keep adjusting until your level tells you that everything is even, and then lock your hitch.

Stabilize

Finally, stabilize your travel trailer so that it stays level. Your model may have automatic jacks or require a tool to raise or lower them. If your RV falls into the latter category, you can attach the tool to a power tool in order to speed up the process. Regardless, make sure your jacks are firmly pressing into the ground while not shoving into it.

As a final aside, do not use your jacks to level your travel trailer. The jacks are designed to support the weight, not adjust to it. In addition, each adjustment to one jack will usually require that you adjust the other three as well, making his process highly inefficient.
