A Bit of History

Winnebago was the brainchild of founder John K. Hanson and was first created with the intention to improve the economy of his town, Forest City, Iowa. With the support of local community leaders,  a California travel trailer manufacturer was encouraged to set up shop in his town. In 1960, the factory was renamed Winnebago Industries after the Iowa county it was founded in.

 

The manufacturing of furniture for the Winnebago trailers started once Hanson, with five other entrepreneurs, acquired the company. In 1966, the first Winnebago motorhome rolled off the assembly lines and soon became an icon of the RV industry thanks to its groundbreaking design and affordability.

 

Winnebago motorhomes were, in general, about half the price of similar competitor models, so customers flocked to them for the sheer bargain. But soon the customers realized that they were getting a premium RV experience and superior quality at a really great price. Over the next few decades, Winnebago became a go-to brand for motorhomes as the company continued to grow and expand.
