Truck campers are some of the easiest RVs to transport. Not only do they completely avoid any of the difficulties and complications associated with towable RVs, but they are also far less massive and thus easier to control than your average motorhome. With that being said, all that extra weight can still be a complication, and it is important that anyone driving with a truck camper be properly prepared before their first trip. That is why Broadmoor RV has created this guide to truck camper driving.

The Truck

For some people, the truck itself can be difficult to get a handle on. While your average pickup truck is not much larger than other types of commuter vehicles, and certainly not as large as a semi-truck or a piece of construction equipment, it is still usually best to take some time out to adjust to the new vehicle and how it handles. Once that is done, you can start to practice with your truck camper loaded into your truck’s bed.

Crunching the Numbers

While truck campers are fairly easy to manage in terms of size, there may still be situations in which you find yourself in danger of violating size restrictions. Take the time to measure your unit’s height, width, and length (with the camper loaded into the truck, of course). If you see a sign indicating that a tunnel or parking spot ahead won’t be able to fit you, you will be able to recognize the situation and plan an alternative route.

Driving a Loaded Truck

Driving a loaded truck offers unique challenges that you need to be prepared to overcome. The biggest challenge will be the limited visibility. Make sure that you are giving yourself extra time to merge between lanes, as well as using a guide when backing up. Be aware of the size and location of your blind spots. Another important thing to remember is that your camper will add extra weight, meaning that you will need to give yourself extra time whenever you need to come to a stop.
