RV Repairs on the Road
As fun as your planned trip may be, a sudden mechanical emergency can bring everything to a screeching halt. While you may be tempted to ignore some of the problems that come up on the road, there are some emergencies you won’t be able to ignore. Engine failure in a motorhome, a flat tire, or other issues have to be resolved on the fly. Because of this, you’ll want to have a plan to address these problems, just in case. We hope you never have to use this plan, but better be safe than sorry!
Inspect Your RV Ahead of Time
As important as an emergency plan is, it’s always best to avoid roadside problems before they happen. This is why you’ll want to take some time before the trip to inspect your entire RV. This means checking every nook and cranny, inside and out. You’ll be looking for any signs of damage that could be a result of a bigger issue (like water damage indicating a leak) or anything that could be underperforming. At the very least, focus on your tires (checking pressure and tread), the overall frame and structure, and anything else that just doesn’t seem to be working the way it normally does or should.
Roadside Assistance
Maybe you have some repair skills, but the odds of knowing how to fix an RV problem are low. Even experienced mechanics may not have the tools they need when they’re at a campsite or on the road. The point is you’re going to want someone to call if you find yourself stranded. Roadside assistance can get a tow truck to your location so you can get your rig to the nearest technician. If you’re already signed up with a roadside assistance company, let them know you’ll be adding an RV to your list of vehicles so they can plan accordingly.
Bring the Right Tools
For those who have the skills to fix some RV problems, you’ll want to ensure you have the tools to match. Basic roadside tools are probably already stashed somewhere in your vehicle. This includes things like a jack and spare tire. But you may want to up your maintenance game a little and bring along a hacksaw, vice grips, side cutter pliers, wire strippers, and duct tape. Basically, think about what kinds of repairs you can do yourself and make sure you have all the tools you’ll need to accomplish this task.
