One important aspect of RV safety that often gets overlooked is fire safety. Between the fuel system, electrical system, and cooking facilities, there are many ways that something can go wrong and start a fire in your RV. Luckily, these tips from Broadmoor RV can help you to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Fire Safety Equipment

The right equipment can go a long way toward keeping you safe from fires while traveling in your RV.

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors warn you if a fire starts in your RV, even if the blaze begins in a different room. Make sure you test your smoke detectors monthly and regularly replace the batteries.

Fire Extinguishers

Place fire extinguishers in your kitchen, in a compartment outside your RV, and in your bedroom. Make sure that everyone that steps into your RV knows how to find the extinguishers, and replace them at the manufacturer-recommended date.

Cooking and Fire Safety

One common cause of RV fires is cooking mishaps. Make sure your kitchen is clear at all times, with items made from combustible materials like towels or curtains away from the stove. Never leave a burner unattended, and always check that all burners are off before you leave a room. Always be safe and focused when you cook. If you choose to have a barbecue or light a campfire, only do so from a safe distance away from your RV.

Electrical Systems

A malfunctioning electrical system is another common cause of RV fires. Have your electrical system inspected on a regular basis, and replace any worn or broken components. Make sure that the cord that connects your RV to the power grid is in good condition, and avoid overloading outlets.

Make a Fire Plan

It is important that you have a fire plan so that everyone knows what to do should the worst happen. Remember to have at least two escape routes in case one becomes blocked and settle on a predetermined meeting spot. This will make it easier to determine if anyone is still trapped inside your RV. If you are traveling with children, practice the fire plan with them and make sure they understand the importance of not going back to save anyone or anything. They should also know how to dial 911 for help.
