How To Load a Powersports Vehicle Into a Toy Hauler

Jun. 13 2022 Ownership Tips By Broadmoor RV

It's possible to easily and securely load a powersports vehicle into your toy hauler's cargo bay area. Whether you want to enjoy trail riding near the campground or are traveling for a competition, use the following tips for a hassle-free loading experience.

Conduct a Pre-Trip Inspection

The first step is to inspect your toy hauler and your tow vehicle. Here, you are looking for any issues that could cause a problem on the open road. It's much easier to get those problems fixed now than in the middle of a vacation.

First, inspect all of the tires. Make sure they are free of damage, have enough tread, and are inflated to the correct air pressure.

Next, test your lights. Make sure they are all bright and replace any burnt out bulbs.

If it's been a long time since you traveled with your toy hauler, you might want to test the various appliances and electronics as well.

Know the Proper Weight Distributions

Before you load any cargo, it's important to know how the weight should be distributed.

Try to keep the weight even from the left to the right side of the toy hauler. This places equal pressure on all the tires and gives you more control during the drive.

Try to place about 60% of the cargo weight in front of the front axle. If there's too much weight placed too far back, it can create issues at higher speeds.

Position the Toy Hauler and the Tow Vehicle

Park the tow vehicle and toy hauler on as flat of ground as possible. This will make the loading process much easier.

Double check that your tow vehicle is placed in park. It's wise to also chock the various wheels, which helps keep everything more steady.

Lower the toy hauler's gate so that it becomes a loading ramp.

Ride the Powersports Vehicle Up the Ramp

Get onto your powersports vehicle and drive up the ramp slowly. Once you are inside the toy hauler's garage, turn off the engine of your powersports vehicle. Too many fumes in a confined space can create the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Secure the Powersports Vehicle

If the powersports vehicle is loose inside the toy hauler's garage, it can lead to problems. The powersports vehicle could get knocked around and damaged. The weight distribution could get messed up and make the towing experience more challenging.

The solution? Secure the model with D-ring tie-downs, ratchet straps, and so on. After you've secured the vehicle, double check your work. Give the powersports vehicle tugs from different angles and add more tie-downs or straps as needed.
