Fifth Wheel Versus Travel Trailer

Should you choose a fifth wheel or travel trailer? It depends on many factors, from your budget to your group size. We’ve created the following comparison article to help make the decision easier.

If you want help deciding or want to shop travel trailers or fifth wheels for sale, contact Broadmoor RV. We are based in the Tri-Cities, Washington, and also serve Spokane and Seattle.

What’s Your Budget?

Think about how much you can spend on an RV, which can influence the type of RV that best matches your budget.

Travel trailers are a great fit for families with smaller budgets. These RVs cost less to purchase and to maintain.

Fifth wheels tend to cost more, but owners also get more. These RVs are more spacious and can also come with more luxurious features to make traveling even more fun.

What’s Your Towing Comfort Level?

Travel trailers and fifth wheels are both towable RVs, but they use different hitching styles (which leads to different towing experiences).

Travel trailers use a bumper pull hitch, which results in the greatest number of potential tow vehicles. These RVs can be transported by many different commuter cars. But you will need to use towing chains as an added security measure (in case the hitch fails). Travel trailers are also more prone to trailer sway and have a less stable towing experience.

Fifth wheels use a gooseneck hitch, which means they get connected into the truck bed. In other words, you’ll need a pickup truck to tow a fifth wheel. This limits your tow vehicle options, but this hitching approach results in a much more stable towing experience. Many RV owners find fifth wheels easier to transport.

How Much Space Do You Need?

Fifth wheels tend to be the most spacious RV option. Their coupling system allows them to  be wider, longer, and heavier than travel trailers. This results in more spacious rooms, extra sleeping spaces, more storage, and extra slideouts. It’s a great option for large groups of people or those who want a more comfortable time at the campground.

Travel trailers, on the other hand, tend to be more compact. They also tend to have less spacious rooms. This is ideal for smaller groups or those who don’t need all the extra space anyways.
